Materials Relating to Artists Who Collaborated at Gemini G.E.L.

Gemini G.E.L. has collaborated with over fifty artists throughout its history. The artist Sam Francis’s archive includes personal correspondence from Sidney B. Felsen as well as documentation from Gemini. The archives below indicate not only the close relationship between Gemini and its artists, but also how these artists connect to the GRI’s holdings of modern and contemporary art in Southern California.

Ed Ruscha photographs of Los Angeles streets, 1974-2010

This collection is comprised of Edward Ruscha's ongoing photographic documentation of Los Angeles thoroughfares. This material demonstrates Ruscha's interest in producing an almost comprehensive representation of the city's main streets. Included are shoots of three streets made in the 1970s: Santa Monica Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway, 1974; and Melrose Avenue, 1975; and over 40 streets shot since 2007.

Vija Celmins and Riko Mizuno oral history interview, 2011

This material comprises video recordings of an oral history interview with Vija Celmins and Riko Mizuno conducted by Rani Singh and John Tain in Santa Monica, California on March 17, 2011. Vija Celmins and Riko Mizuno begin by discussing how they met and the establishment of Mizuno's gallery. They then converse about a variety of topics and people related to the art world of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

The Claes Oldenberg and Coosje van Bruggen papers, a recent acquisition, presents researchers with a more comprehensive look at Oldenberg’s life-long interest in automobiles, the subject matter of Airflow, dating back to his early childhood. The Claes Oldenburg archive covers every period of his career from youth to the present day, including unpublished materials from the height of his activity in the 1960s. Included in the collection are drawings, notes, diaries, and other handwritten texts covering more than 60 years of Oldenburg's activity; personal and business records; and more than 2,000 loose sketches and collages.

The Sam Francis papers span the artist's entire life and include family and personal material as well as correspondence with friends and art institutions around the world. Francis' art-related businesses, the Litho Shop and Lapis Press, are well documented. There are also numerous prints, products, and art making tools.
