Vaccination Policy & Verification Process

The Getty Library requires all Readers and first-time visitors to be fully vaccinated with a WHO-approved COVID vaccine by the date of their appointment.

Two weeks must pass after the second dose of a 2-dose series or a single-dose vaccine.

Proof of vaccination is required.

You must show your government-issued photo ID with your paper vaccination card, digital vaccination record, or a photograph of your vaccination card.

Vaccination verification is a 3-step process

  • Step 1: Show proof of vaccination and photo ID on T1 (tram level of the parking structure at the main entrance). On T1, a staff member or security officer will direct you to the vaccination verification location.1 After the vaccination verification is completed on T1, take the tram up the hill and go to the Getty Research Institute (GRI) Plaza Level.
  • Step 2: Upon entry at the GRI Plaza level, stop at the Security Desk where an officer will conduct another vaccination verification check and a sticker will be placed on both sides of your Reader badge (or a temporary badge).
  • Step 3: After receiving the stickers, you must check-in at the Reference Desk between 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. or 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. when the desk is staffed in-person and show your stickers so that we can complete the verification process.2

1 If you arrive on a Monday and do not have a Reader badge or have a Reader badge without stickers, you will bypass this step and proceed to take the tram up the hill and go to the Getty Research Institute (GRI) Plaza Level for Step 2.

2 Once you receive the stickers on your Reader badge and verify them at the Reference Desk, you will not need to do these steps again, unless you receive a new Reader badge or forgot your Reader badge. At T1, you will show your Reader badge with stickers to the staff member or security officer to proceed directly to the tram.

Your mask must fit snugly, covering your nose and mouth at all times.

KN95 masks are available to Readers upon request. Please ask at the GRI Plaza Security desk.

Gaiters, bandanas, scarves, ski masks, balaclavas, and masks with exhalation valves are not permitted to be worn by themselves as a substitute for a face mask. Face shields are not sufficient by themselves but can be worn over masks.
